I rarely tune into Fearne Cotton on Radio 1 due to usually encountering unhealthy amounts of Chase & Status, so I was very pleased a few weeks back to hear a silky smooth cover of Blackstreet’s R&B classic, ‘No Diggidy’. The man behind this future sex music is the mysterious Chet Faker, hailing from the deep-disco music scene of Melbourne. The combination of electronica influences from his hometown alongside an acoustic past ultimately creates a wholesome, organic touch, laced with personal tales of love and loss. Listen to ‘Love and Feeling’ if you’re in the mood for some honey-like vocals and deeply soothing riffs that make you melt into your bed. When asked about his music, Chet comments on how he focuses on the textures of the vibes, rather than the musicality of his songs. As recently conveyed by Small Werld, his music is “Kinda like with Chet Baker – it’s not what he sings, it’s how he sings.” This is definitely true of Faker’s music; he tenders over the actual piecing together of a song, rather than simply tying some sounds together.
Chet Faker is a rare example of someone who has miraculously managed to become an internet sensation whilst maintaining a quiet profile of himself; in fact all we really know is that he sports a grizzly ginger beard. Following his overnight success, the Australian beatsmith was able to sell out his very first public show last November at a well-known Melbourne venue, Toff in Town, proving his distant melodic riffs can be translated into a live environment. You can see how well he did the job over at his soundcloud, where you can do yourself a favour and enlighten your ears with a number of his other mellow songs.
His first EP, Terms and Conditions, is due for release on the 26th of March.
