Uploaded to their soundcloud page a few weeks ago, Ellen and the Escapades have graced our ears with a beautiful version of R. Kelly’s ‘World’s Greatest’. Though not much of a fan of Mr. Kelly myself, I cannot deny that the song is rather special.
A motivational piece, could perhaps be listened to on repeat a couple-hundred times before entering the boxing ring and show somebody some no holds barred glove-love (I don’t like boxing. Fighting is not nice.) Whereas the original is more likely to get you ‘pumped’, so to speak, Ellen and the Escapades’ cover creates an entirely different atmosphere. The gentle guitar accompaniment and Ellen Smith’s pure, enticing vocals remain smooth and understated throughout the entirety of the song. Additionally, I for one am a sucker for Smith’s distinct accent, and I feel it makes for an utterly charming listening experience. Admittedly, I would have fully supported a cheesy, ‘topofthestairs’ type key change towards the end, but regardless, the all round loveliness of the track does not disappoint.
