Last Saturday I was at The Queen of Hoxton bar for a Crystal Fighters DJ set and I fell in love. I fell in love with a girl and I totally dig her band. Her name is Mia Kemppainen and she is one half of the Finish electro-pop sister duo LCMDF (Le Corps Mince De Françoise).
They started in 2006 as a trio when older sister Emma needed to get a band together after she got offered a gig when she put her music up on the internet. She recruited Mia and her best friend Malin and they played dancey new-rave music for the kids of Europe.
Six years down the line and they have transformed. Malin has gone and their music is a super cool blend of 90’s pop and hip hop influences full of electro synths, acid-house beats, Stone Roses guitars and frantic vocals under beautiful singing. It’s quite simply up-beat, fun music, perfect for having a good time to. Live, they make a pretty perfect duo. Emma jumps around and works the crowd, spitting her rhymes confidently and quite evidently having a great time while Mia is quite possibly the coolest girl you’ve ever seen, playing guitar and singing the choruses and harmonies.
Their album Love & Nature came out in September 2011 and it’s full of great songs. ‘Take Me To The Mountains’ is the record’s dancey opener that sees the girls chanting the words of the title over air-horn synths and jumping beats. ‘Something Golden’, ‘Future Me’, ‘Time (Have I Lost My Mind?)’ and ‘Ghandi’ are album highlights, the latter being a wonderful mix of acid-house rhythms and chanted mantras and a personal favourite.
Give the Kemppainens a listen and if you get the chance, go and see them live.
