Another video. Another director. This time its Emile Sornin and is frankly mental. This new release is the ‘official’ one, so ignore any temptations to watch the one with lesbians in a church. We guess that makes Guillaume Cagniard’s just expensive messing around? Officially it’s an ‘art video’, but as far as we’re concerned all videos should be art. So no clues there either.
Now Mercury Prize winners, Alt-J are basically having the best year. Literally cannot make sense of this one, though. As we can’t really make a lot of sense from the lyrics either that’s probably suitable. We were really fond of the art video, but this one isn’t bad. The bizarre contortions, mix of slow motion and regular speed footage, black and white imagery and generally weird shit going on has received a mixed response. Some people love it (though, it seems largely a reflection on the song itself, and Joe Newman’s unique vocals), while others find it disjointed, and aren’t fans of the lack of synchronisation between audio and visual. We are undecided, but remain pretty loyal to Cagniard’s version.
Maybe religious iconography and lesbians aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. Who knew?
‘Fitzpleasure’, despite its two videos, hasn’t acquired single status; but there is always the Mercury award winning album to keep you occupied.*
*Also 9.5/10 on DYC and there isn’t much higher praise than that.
