James Vincent McMorrow has unveiled the video for ‘Cavalier’, the first single from his forthcoming second album, Post Tropical (January 13). Following the platinum-selling debut album, Early In The Morning, McMorrow plays a run of intimate UK dates in January – including a show at the Barbican on January 26.
The striking video for ‘Cavalier’ is the first of a trilogy of short films by acclaimed director Aoife Mcardle (Beck, Jon Hopkins, Anna Calvi). Describing the clip, shot in America, James says: “my hope with the video was that it would add another dimension to the song. I love Aoife’s work, and she heard something in the song that elicited a reaction. That’s what the video is: it’s her reaction the record.”
A brooding twist on the Slow-Jam, the song builds quietly from hushed keys and hand-claps to soaring brass, drums and James’ idiosyncratic falsetto. The song was recorded, together with the album as a whole, on a pecan farm half a mile from the Mexican border, where the low frequencies of passing freight trains vibrated in the studio, briefly disturbing the birds in the rafters.
