Canadian band Suuns have gone for a faded and out-of-focus home video style to accompany ‘Edie’s dream’, from their second album, Images Du Futur, which is out in March.
We follow a bland girl with long lank hair, as she drags a shovel through some woodland. Why is she doing this? Interest is ignited – slightly. Then the girl awkwardly mimes the lyrics of the male vocalist, her eyes stare vacantly at the camera while her mouth moves in an uncomfortable and unnatural slow motion. It’s perhaps meant to be creepy, but it simply looks wrong. Then we’re drowning in water, okay, so something more is going on here. Maybe it’s about some dark sinister oppression, mirroring the droning and repetitive nature of the song. Maybe the girl is being held captive by whoever holds the video camera. She starts digging – then we’re drowning again, and blinded by a strange green light! Maybe not… all illusion is broken by the return of the bizarre miming. The girl is lying in the nice muddy hole she’s dug herself, and appears to be asleep. Oh, great.
Underwhelmed and unimpressed. I don’t mind cheap productions, I quite like water and cool lighting, but the almost-promising storyline failed to go anywhere interesting and the girl was just odd.
