After going on hiatus back in 2009 following the release of ‘One More Chance’, people have been questioning whether there was going to be another album. 2010 was a time for the band members to do their own thing, and work on outside projects. Kele finished a book he’d been working on for 3 years, and released 2 solo albums The Boxer and The Hunter, Russell worked with multiple bands but was most noted for touring with Ash, Matt built a recording studio in his own basement and Gordon worked with his other band, ‘Young Legionnaire’ and became a father.
The band started making this album in the winter of 2011 in New York, after the members missed being part of the genre-defying band; they arranged to meet in New York where they would begin writing the next record. Fans were kept in the dark at first becuase they didn’t know if these sessions together would be successful, however they proved fruitful as they came away with a whole new album that Kele Okereke says he’s ‘prouder of it than any record we have ever made’. The album is produced by Alex Newport who is known for working with Death Cab For Cutie, The Mars Volta and At The Drive-In.
When I first read the rumours of Bloc planning their next album, I didn’t know what to fully expect, each one of their albums is a different experience, however from listening to the snippets of the tracks in the trailer; the album sounds as though it would fit right in-between older previous albums Silent Alarm and Weekend in the City, the sound seems familiar, yet the tone and emotions are fresh and real.
