‘Abraham’s Daughter’ might just be one of the creepiest and darkest, yet undeniably captivating songs Arcade Fire has composed. They created the haunting, dangerous song for The Hunger Games, a movie about children being forced to fight one another to the death. The song uses an old war march and adds some modern instruments to create a tune that is soft and flowy, but at the same time is heavy and powerful. The track develops into an explosive repetitive percussion beat that is accompanied with a powerful incremental swell. Then at the end it evens back out to the flow and softness it started out with.
The bone chilling lyrics go perfectly with the style of the music. ‘Abraham’s Daughter’ is a song about children being used as a sacrifice. Putting Régine Chassagne’s beautiful voice on lead vocals gives the song this gothic choir vibe that complements the dark melodic war march.
It is quite musically fascinating because ‘Abraham’s Daughter’ is not the typical Arcade Fire tune, but more a distorted version of Arcade Fire. I myself am a huge Arcade Fire fan. This is not the sound I was expecting from the band. But keep in mind they wrote ‘Abraham’s Daughter’ for a dark movie soundtrack, The Hunger Games Soundtrack, available this March. Though not a typical Arcade Fire sound, I am quite fond of the war like graceful style they have chosen for ‘Abraham’s Daughter’.
