If you think you’ve had an interesting week, you can bet your bottom dollar it still has nothing on the week Frank Ocean has had. On Wednesday morning, he bravely publicised his bisexuality on his tumblr, and by the end of that same day he could tweet that Stevie Wonder had sang ‘No Church in the Wild’ to him at an Independence Day party. And to top it all off, The Odd Future cohort member has dropped the latest track from his forthcoming debut album Channel Orange.
The song, titled ‘Sweet Life’ was co-written by Pharrell, and does very little to distance the R&B crooner from the numerous Stevie Wonder comparisons. Not that this is a bad thing. Ocean sings lyrics detailing the finer things in life over a backing track of warm horns, a striking bass line and a perpetually arpeggiating keyboard riff and all the while the track still manages to sound loose and unconstrained.
What Ocean has given us here is a remarkable track, but this is what we have come to expect from Frank, who just seems to continuously churn out gems like this.
Channel Orange will be released on July 17th through Def Jam Records
