Thank goodness for that: Jose Gonzalez is back. Well, he’s been back since December, apparently, but I’ve been little slow on this one. Beautiful, contemplative and peaceful as ever, Stay Alive has brought Gonzalez and his mesmerising vocals back into my life.
With lines such as ‘Where the lights don’t move and the colours don’t fade/ Leaves you empty with nothing but dreams/ In a world gone shallow’, it’s certainly contemplative, if not down-right depressing. The pace of the layered ticking sound adds another dimension to the time-mindful atmosphere of the song, and the rhythm fluctuates throughout.
The opening piano chords are a little slow and soppy I’ll grant you, but the accompaniment soon builds into something bolder as the drums and strings join the piano in a hair-raising crescendo before fading out again at the close.
Good to have you back Jose.
