Lana Del Rey has released a haunting cover of Leonard Cohen’s solemn track about a one night stand, ‘Chelsea Hotel No 2.’ What has to be admired about Lana is her lack of promotional elaborations, dropping this track with no prior warning or clues.
The track holds a stark contrast to the songs that can be found on her stunning debut album Born to Die, employing a single guitar as opposed to the usual grandiose orchestration. Not that this makes the any difference to the quality of the track. Lana is an expert in creating an atmosphere by combining the audio and visual elements of any song.
The accompanying video is remarkably intimate, showing disparity from that of the previous single ‘Ride’ and its elaborate story telling video. We see her sitting alone singling whilst smoking her Marlborough Reds, and of course, showing off her trademark pout.
