There are only two things I like more than single-word citrus-themed bandnames, and here they are in descending order: Yeasayer/AnCo-influenced psych pop, and the new wave of alternative r&b spearheaded by artists such as The Weeknd and How To Dress Well. Imagine my surprise then, when I drunkenly stumbled across Lemonade’s most recent single, carved magnificently from the upcoming LP Diver (out May 29th, dontchaknow) during my daily stalk of bro-tier label True Panther’s website.
Opening like a more immediate version of Frank Ocean’s recent mini-hit ‘Thinking About You’, the track soon blossoms into ascending and descending distant Blood Orange-esque synths while boyband vocal background ‘aaaahs’ prophesise the coming of increasingly pop-influenced vocals, spinning a tale of lovers spurned. The beat, although accessible and possessing a great deal of radio sheen, still remains very much on the more left-field side of the fence, with what sound like synthesised African percussive sounds making a few fleeting appearances and metallic, processed drums rattling in the mid-distance
Like a Drake you could trust to date your daughter without forcing her to take MDMA and participate in dreamily-produced group-sex situations, the super-smooth new direction for Lemonade explores as of yet unrecorded new areas of sensuality and is just 90s New Jack Swing enough to satisfy the urge you sometimes get to listen to bad 90s r&b hits. Enjoy (and download if you don’t immediately hate me + my taste) below!
