After Lianne la Havas’ album Is Your Love Big Enough just debuted at #4 in the UK, this beautiful young lady is proving the one to watch for the summer of 2012. The soul/rock singer songwriter and Sound of 2012 nominee has already been remixed by Boston DJ duo Soul Clap and has performed at Latitude 2012 and Sunday Brunch on Channel 4, to name but a few. The 22 year old Londoner has been told by her boyfriend to call herself single while in the public eye, to make her seem available, but it does not take long to work out that she is taken, as her soulful songs are coloured by references to lovers and previous relationships.
La Havas sings with an entrancing slow vibrato which has been assimilated to Erykah Badu and the earlier tones of Amy Winehouse, which twinned with a vintage inspired style and captivating face make her a very interesting young lady. The video for the title track opens with Polaroid photographs being dropped slowly, and each one with a single word from the title, shortly followed by La Havas’ name illustrated along the bottom of a speaker. The video switches between scenes of her shows and her journey as an up and coming urban artist, with some intimate shots of rehearsals and the band fooling around. I just can’t get enough of La Havas’ raw, honest lyrics, asking the question all lovers are dying to know, and the enticing and amorous way in which she speaks them.
I think it’s safe to say that my love could not be bigger for Lianne La Havas. She was overcome with happiness when asked to perform for Jools Holland’s show, so much so that she had to “do a wee”. Cute. From all at the DYC team, Lianne La Havas, you are just lovely.
