Real Estate - In My CarIf you’re looking for chilled out, indie rock music then look no further than New Jersey band Real Estate. Their mellow and simplistic style is easy to get along with and new tracks, ‘In My Car’ and ‘Exactly Nothing’, make for lovely listening.

‘In My Car’ has an almost dreamy vibe. Martin Courtney’s soft vocals against the equally gentle melody create a beautiful sound that’s instantly enjoyable. It’s also hard not to love the lyrics; “looking for a place to go where everything’s alright” is universally relatable and not overly flowery, which is also quite refreshing.

Similarly, ‘Exactly Nothing’ is of a tender nature. Musically, it’s warm and optimistic (making it ideal for a summer playlist). There’s a blunt undercurrent to the song’s lyrics but this provides a welcome contrast to its nicer than nice beat. Although not as interesting as ‘In My Car’, ‘Exactly Nothing’ is a cool, quietly catchy tune that is well worth a play.

Even though the new offerings are very likeable, you could just as easily say that they have the potential to become a bit tedious. They’re both lacking in any real kick and aren’t entirely exciting or innovative. However, that doesn’t mean that they should be overlooked. These two tracks may not be completely ground-breaking but they’re still well written and they’re still a notable contribution. Real Estate are a perfect example of how music doesn’t always have to sound HUGE to be valid and important.

‘Exactly Nothing’ will be released as a B Side to ‘Easy’ on 5th March and is available to pre-order from the band’s website. ‘In My Car’ is an exclusive track made for Record Store Day and is part of the Domino Records/Ribbon limited edition zine, Smugglers Way. You will be able to purchase it at independent record stores on 21st April.
