It was, well, exquisite. As good as it all was, the undeniable highlight of one of 2009’s best releases was ‘Billie Holiday’, a half-cover of the Smokey Robinson penned, Mary Wells performed classic of ’64, ‘My Guy’. The re-release sees a couple of minutes lopped off the original mix for the purposes of radio airtime, but retains all of what made the initial release such a treat. The vocals are still beatifically sticky and drift in and out of the mix, whilst the guitars retain that apathetic lullaby vibe and heady atmosphere. Terrific stuff from the L.A songstresses. The newly-mixed track is set to appear on a deluxe edition of the band’s debut LP, The Fool. Listen to ‘Billie Holiday’ below:
